The SmartWay Transport Partnership is a collaboration between freight shippers, carriers, and logistics companies to voluntarily improve fuel efficiency, increase environmental performance, and increase supply chain sustainability. The program is administered by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA). Partnership members achieve fuel savings and emission reductions in several ways. Freight carriers fulfill their commitment to the Partnership by upgrading their fleet with various fuel saving technologies and by reducing idle time. SmartWay strategies include: wind deflectors to reduce aerodynamic drag, fuel-efficient tires to reduce rolling resistance, idle reduction equipment to keep cab cool and powered while allowing engine to shut off, use of speed governors, and use of hybrid powertrain systems.
